What reads as a single bloom is a capitulum — a dense head of individual florets. The white "petals" are ray florets, each a complete flower with a fused, flattened corolla. The gold centre is a packed spiral of disc florets that open outward over about ten days, which is why a daisy stays useful to pollinators long after it first opens.
